VMware ESXi 5Tips for today tomorrow and beyond!

The enterprise level of computer virtualization isVMware ESX. The ESX is a component of VMware’s largest productions. Now this VMware is replacing the original ESX with the ESXi. The VMware ESXi can directly run on the server hardware without requiring any additional operating system.

The current version of VMware ESXi is 5.0. This is the recent updated version and came with many unique features such as Storage DRS and Auto deploy.

As like the previous versions VMware ESXi 5 supports on the ESXi hypervisor architecture. This thin purpose-built hypervisor does not depend or not found in the general operating systems. So with this new feature VMware recommends it’s customer to upgrade deployments of vSphere 4.x or older to vSphere 5 and also to migrate existing deployments to ESXi 5.

The new features introduced in this version include:-

  • New virtual-machine format (Version 8) – It supports 3D graphics for Windows Aero and also the latest USB 3.0 devices.
  • Support for Apple products – It supports Apple Xserve servers running OS X server 10.6,which is also called as snow leopard and act as a guest operating system.
  • vSphere Storage DRS – This feature improved the more-efficient usage of storage resources through grouping and balancing.
  • Profile-Driven Storage DRS-This depends on the service level of the virtual machine. It depends on the selecting of correct storage and ensuring the delivery.
  • vSphere File System-It has a non-disruptive upgrade to the latest clustered file system.
  • vSphere storage I/O Control-It has an improved management of SLAs and also shares in Network File System (NFS).
  • vSphere Storage API Program- It has a great advantage to the Array Integration API and also supports thin provisioning.

There are two versions of VMware ESX, they are ESX and ESXi. The first version of VMware ESX is VMware ESX server 1.0 and it was first released 1n 2001, after that in the year of 2002 VMware ESX server 1.5 is released and like this it continued introducing several versions one after one with the latest fixes. The last released VMware ESX is version 4.1 in the year Oct 27, 2011.

But VMware ESXi was first publicly released on December 31, 2007 and after that it is the only version that continued. Today it has an updated version of 5.0 released on March 15, 2012.

Coming to the architecture side of VMware, we can say that the ESX product runs on the bare metal and it does not run atop of a third-party operating system. But in the recent released current version 5.0 of VMware it is a Linux kernel. It is used because to load a different variety of virtualization components that includes VMware’s vmkernel component. This kind of virtual machine is called as service console. Again VMware has introduced that the vmkernel have three interfaces in it and also called as micro kernel.

The three interfaces are hardware, guest systems, and service console or console OS. The work of the vmkernel is to handle the CPU and memory directly. The scan-before-execution which is a part of the CPU is used to handle only the special and privileged CPU instructions. The other component SRAT (system resource allocation table) is used to track the memory.

To access hardware’s such as network and storage devices can be done using modules. There are few modules that are derived from the modules are used in Linux kernel to perform more complex operations. These modules can be accessed by an additional module called vmklinux which is mostly required to implement the Linux module interface.
